5/24/2007 Recap from Race Committee (Bob Lemaire):

The confusion at the pin was evident. Apparently some boats thought they were finishing, as if it was a "once-around" race. This was complicated by a further left shift around that time.

As the fleet started upwind, noticeably scrambled, we headed to the weather mark to be ready to finish the race there if the wind continued to die. As it turned out, there were ripples on the water at the weather mark and the direction was right at the finish line. We elected to let the race go the distance.

For many of you, the shifts probably seemed to be more pronounced than we observed, because you see apparent wind. In particular, the righties were mostly of lower velocity, so if you were going downwind on starboard, they probably felt like 90 degree shifts. Definitely a big clue to jibe.

Here are a few notes to help avoid confusion getting around the course in the weeks to come:

  1. Read the SI. A leeward mark is optional, and when not placed, the pin serves as a leeward mark, to be left to port - just like we have done for the last two years. If there is a leeward mark, it will be in position when you round the weather mark.
  2. Although there is provision for hailing the number of legs before the race, I do not intend to start any "once-around" races. If conditions warrant once around, a standard race will be started, and we will finish you at the leeward mark, as you round it to port, by either moving the committee boat or using the mark boat. You will know we are finishing you because we will be flying code flag "S".<
  3. As we move marks, sometimes I will drop the new mark and then pick up the old one. Flag C will be displayed in the vicinity of the previous mark, so you know there is a new mark up there. We don't have a system for designating the new mark so if folks think that is ambiguous and want to object to the procedure, say so now and we will leave the skewed course. In many cases there is simply not enough time between when the last boat rounds the windward mark and the lead boat rounds the leeward mark.
  4. We recognize that the CB horn was not audible at the leeward rounding of the second race. We will try to use the louder starting horn when presented with that situation in the future. In any event, there was only one windward mark out there and code flag C was up, so I don't think it caused anybody to go the wrong way.

Lastly, you should know that if we do something to prejudice your race in particular, we will recognize that and would be forthcoming at any redress hearing. If you think we violated the SI or RRS in such a way as to cause an unfair race, please let us know. If we agree, we will throw out the race.

6/07/2007 Recap from Race Committee (Bob Lemaire):

Well.... another light air Thursday. They just keep coming.

Pete and Scott were in the racing area for an hour before the start. They recorded a steady 8-10 from WNW at 285. At about17:45, the breeze was down to 5-6 (slight ripples on the water), but still pretty much from WNW at 290. We started a sequence at 18:00 sharp. The breeze was still in the 5-6 range and was pretty consistently from 290 throughout the sequence.

We adjusted the starting line at the warning signal to 200/20. Most of the boats started at the committee boat with three being pushed over. Individual recall was signaled.

The wind dropped more during the beat and most of the fleet worked the left to stay closer to shore where there was a visible patch of more pressure. The lead pack rounded the weather mark pretty close, and we waited to see how the run would work.

It was clear that the lead boats were able to carry, but things were going slow. We discussed whether to finish at the end of that leg or to try to bring the weather mark closer and have a final windward leg. It became apparent that the merciful thing to do was to finish the fleet at the leeward mark.

We set up the mark boat on the required side of the leeward mark and hoisted flag S. At this time the fleet was still too far to see or hear any signals, so we announced our intention on the radio.

As it turned out, the first boat finished doing two or three knots having carried her spinnaker through the entire leg without breaking.

The second and third place boats had a few problems keeping their spinnaker full but finished strong.

We hoisted flag A at the finish to signal no more racing.

At the finish, the winners were happy, some of those deeper in the fleet were not. A much more predictable situation than the weather. In discussing what happened we all felt that it was appropriate to start a race with 5-6 knots of steady air. Pretty early on, several boats made favorable tactical moves to pull ahead, and from that point on, it would not have been fair to abandon as long as they continued to move through the water.

Although I don't like once around races, it was nevertheless a long race with plenty of opportunity to gain advantage, both in boat speed and tactics. The wind did not shift appreciably and the leaders were able to make steady progress toward their goal.

My congratulations to the top boats. They worked hard and concentrated on capitalizing on every opportunity. Their victory was by no means the result of chance.

All that said, I'd really like to see a night with a steady 10-15.
