Three Tack RaceSunday, July 27, 2008 The Three Tack Race was held on July 27 with nine boats venturing out for the event. In spite of the light air it appeared to be building nicely. The object of the race was to see which boat could go the furthest in Three Tacks with the starting tack counting as the first one. It was determined that the race would be started on the west side of Welch Island because the wind was from the southwest. Most of the boats maneuvered their way into Sander's Bay in just two tacks, and in a short amount of time. Whereas the wind still seemed to hold the fleet decided to extend the event to include a sail around Welch Island keeping the island to starboard. Shortly after the decision was made, and the boats were on their way, the wind began to gradually diminish and only the J-80 Jolly Mon persevered and completed the sail around Welch Island. A dock party back at Fay's Boat Yard was enjoyed by the boat crews. Fay's gift certificates were awarded to Jim Baker of Scott Free for recognition as the only single-handed skipper in the race; Patrick VanRooyen of Kookaburra II received recognition for having the most international crew; and the crazy people award went to Jon and Ann Rochlis of Jolly Mon for completion of the sail around Welch Island. The participating boats were Tranquility II, Scott Free, Chimera, Paradox, Czech-Mate, Haleakala, Kookaburra II, Jolly Mon and a recently purchased J-24 named Wayfumo. Submitted by Donna A. Garland |
