2006 J/80 Fleet 1 ScoringThanks to the work of the past fleet captains on the Scoring Committee, scoring this year will include regular series scoring with a new system for byes and discards, a special Mentor series designed to strengthen the entire fleet, and the Boat of the Year competition. Each series will be scored as follows:The Low Point Scoring System in Appendix A of the Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008 will be used. Six races shall constitute a series. A maximum of eighteen races per series are scheduled. The first three races of each night will be scored. Each boat’s series score will be the total of all its scores, discarding the worst score if more than six races are held in the series. The maximum number of discards allowed in a series will be one. This changes rule A2. Byes: Each boat will be entitled to receive her average score (after discard) for all races of one regatta (night) in which she was scored DNC. Details will be addressed in the Sailing Instructions.
Summer Mentor AwardsTo be completed during the Summer Series. Boats will be paired up into teams based upon their finishing places in the Spring Series, top finishing boat with the last place boat, second with second to last, etc. At the end of the Summer Series the scores of each teamed pair will be combined, with the top three winning teams being recognized by receipt of the Mentor Awards. The scoring system is structured to provide motivation to both boats. The lower-placing boat of the winning teams will receive the actual award, providing that boat and its crew meaningful recognition from within the ranks of the lower tier of the overall fleet. The combined score of each team will be used in the overall scoring for the Boat of the Year Award determination rather than the individual Summer Series scores. This will encourage high-placing boats to, in fact, provide real mentoring to its paired team member during the Summer Series. The less competitive boats should receive instruction and encouragement from the top tier boats, maybe even some crew swapping and lots of tips. The more competive boats can feel the pride of passing on some of their skills to their team mate boat and play a real role at making Fleet 1 an even better racing fleet.
Boat of the YearAn individual boat will be declared Boat of the Year based upon the combined results of the Spring Series, the Special Summer Mentor Series, and the results of the J Jamboree (North American Championship in 2006). The total points from the three events will be added together to determine the overall winner. A tie will be broken using the criteria from Appendix A of the RRS. Points from the Summer Mentor Series will be determined by the combining the scores of the Mentor boat and paired Companion boat. Points from the J Jamboree results will be determined by the actual finish positions of Fleet 1 boats, i.e.: A Fleet 1 boat that finishes a J Jamboree race in third place would receive the three points of his/ her actual finishing place in that race. The winner will be declared at the Award's Dinner in October and will receive the perpetual trophy for that year.
